Like anything else, developing good oral hygiene habits starts early. At Whidbey Dental Associates, our dentists are here to help your children develop important oral health habits early so that they enjoy a lifetime of beautiful smiles. By striving to provide a warm and friendly atmosphere, our team makes your child’s first dental appointment a positive experience.
When Should I Bring My Child for Their First Appointment?
In accordance with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend that you bring your child in for their first check up once their first tooth starts to emerge or at their first birthday. During this first visit, our Oak Harbor dentists will walk you through the steps of caring for your child’s teeth and gums as they develop and can answer any questions you may have about dental care for your young one.
As more of your child’s teeth emerge, Dr. Douglas, Dr. Derek, and Dr. Hope will continue to monitor their oral health. We’ll also teach your child the right way of caring for their own smile and get them into the habit of brushing and flossing each day. While we always hope to avoid cavities, sometimes it’s inevitable. Routine visits every six months help our team keep an eye out for cavities as well as other common dental issues, like malocclusion. If we find them, we can recommend the proper treatment before these problems can damage your child’s smile.
Why are Baby Teeth Important?
Primary teeth are often overlooked because ultimately, they will be replaced by permanent teeth. What few parents realize however is that the health of baby teeth can influence the health of future permanent teeth. While a healthy set of baby teeth can give way to a healthy adult dentition, conditions like childhood caries (cavities) and gingivitis creates an unhealthy environment for future adult teeth. Ultimately, these common oral health problems put adult teeth at a high risk of decay.
