There’s a lot to consider when choosing a dentist. You want to find someone who’s caring, compassionate, and experienced — and all of which delivered in a safe and gentle environment.
At Whidbey Dental Associates, Dr. Wirth and our staff have collected some questions and answers to highlight the importance of effective dental care. If you have further questions, don’t hesitate to contact our office. A member of our friendly staff can help!
What type of toothpaste/toothbrush should I use?
Hard or medium bristles can damage your teeth and gums, so we recommend choosing a toothbrush with soft or extra soft bristles. Also, Dr. Wirth doesn’t have a preference for electric or manual toothbrushes, as long as you clean the surfaces of each tooth to completion. Replace your toothbrush after 3-4 months of use.
In terms of toothpaste, the goal is to remove and prevent the growth of bacteria. If you’re nervous about which to choose, try one with the ADA’s (American Dental Association) Seal of Acceptance — these will always contain fluoride which protects and strengthens teeth.
Do I really need to floss?
Yes. Flossing clears food debris and plaque from between the teeth and under the gumline. Any plaque not cleared will turn to tartar, creating gaps between the teeth and gums which eventually loosens teeth.
If you’re struggling to floss, we suggest nylon-coated floss because it’s designed to glide against the gums and teeth without damaging them.
What should I look for when choosing a dentist?
Choosing the right dentist is a very personal decision. You want to select someone who makes you feel safe. You also want to receive dental care in a warm and friendly environment. Visiting a dental practice is a great way to find out if it’s the right office for you.
Of course, you also want to consider your dentist’s background and qualifications. A good way to do this is to check their education and training. It’s also important to look at their professional affiliations, including the professional associations they belong to.
Finally, you’ll want to check the reviews to find out what other patients are saying.
Should I be using mouthwash?
Mouthwash is an exceptional (and necessary) addition to any oral care regimen. It protects your teeth from cavities, sensitivity, and bad breath. If you suffer from dry mouth, you can use an alcohol-free mouthwash. Also, if your child is under six-years-old, they shouldn’t use these products.
Why do I need a dental exam?
Routine visits to Whidbey Island Dental aren’t just for fun — it’s Dr. Wirth’s time to check on your smile. Regular visits help him identify dental issues early so we can treat them before they get out of hand. Check out our routine cleanings and exams.
Are dental x-rays safe?
Who are my dentists?
Do you treat children?
We do! Everyone is welcome at Whidbey Dental Associates in Oak Harbor, WA. Our dentists are trained to work with children compassionately and educationally. We’ll help them develop the necessary oral care habits that’ll set their smiles up for long-term success.
What are same day restorations?
At Whidbey Dental Associates, we use CEREC which is a computer-aided design and manufacturing machine. With this technology, we can create stunning crowns on the same day as your appointment — this means you’ll leave our office with a fully restored smile every time.
Do root canals hurt?
Root canals as a service have a terrible reputation for being extremely painful. However, at Whidbey Dental Associates, they’re no more painful than your typical filling. While the sensations might be uncomfortable, the pain is non-existent thanks to our local anesthetic.
If I have a dental emergency, what should I do?
If you have a dental emergency and it’s during our office hours, call us immediately. The sooner we can get you in, the better chance we have to save your tooth or solve the issue. If you need assistance, but our office is closed, go to the nearest emergency room.
How long does Invisalign® take to straighten teeth?
What is a smile makeover?
Some of our patients have smiles that need more than a little work. In these situations, Dr. Wirth might recommend a smile makeover. This service allows you to combine multiple services (restorative and cosmetic) to create the smile you’ve always wanted.
Is in-office teeth whitening as effective as over-the-counter solutions?
What technology does the office use?
Our dental technology creates safer, faster, and more effective treatments. We use a TSCAN system for misaligned teeth, CEREC for same day crowns, VELscope for oral cancer screening, X-NAV for reliable implant placement during surgery, CBCT scanners for fast, high-resolution images of your oral structure, and digital x-rays for more rapid, safer imaging.
